![]() ![]() ![]() setting lotion, pink foam rollers and a pick. I learned to set and style my hair with just the simple tools of teh trade. The rest of the summer was a learning experience. ![]() They beleived it was a perm, and that kinda dug me into a hole. I didn't tell them that I had just curled it. I thought they would tease me a bunch, but they did not. I kept it for church, met some friends there who really liked the look. ![]() It was not as spectacular as a salon visit or anything, my mom used a "cheese cutter" aka a pick to loosen the curls. I ate breakfast, did the dishes, and then the moment came when it was time to do the combout. I knew that this would be a turning point in my life! I loved the look, and the feel of the rollers wound to my scalp. I got up and looked for a long time in the mirror at the pink rollers with black hair wound around them. I went to bed at midnight and slept 'till 9:00 am Sunday. I remember the setting lotion they used was called Nestle, and it had a really sweet smell to it. Each were placed really close together to get lots of curls in. They used medium pink foam rollers, and they used a ton of them. We stayed up late watching SNL, and my grandmother started on rolling my hair. must have been mid June in 1977, I had my first experience. On a Saturday night, after graduation form highschool. My grandmother and mom both talked me into curling it. NOw we didn't have a lot of money for such a thing, and I was kinda scared to commit to one anyway. This is copied right from Arborwood where I originally wrote it. I suppose had I had 'leanings' or downright interest in getting my hair set and permed as a boy, life might have been different for me, but the fact that I never wanted it, never asked for it, never enjoyed it and didnt take any interest until I was fully into high school, and the onslaught of sexual maturation finally led me to become more involved. Then about a year later i was sent to my aunt to spend the summer and she had me permed by her beautician and i spent the whole summer in curls! I was forced permed by my mother and her friend who owned a beauty shop. These days, I am living as a non-operative TS., for those of you who are curious. Oh, how I would have loved to have been in that little fellow's shoes when I was young! There is a picture somewhere in this forum of a boy getting a permanent. I am still envious of both of these boys. From this, I conclude that his mother must have been perming him frequently, and probably pincurling him nearly every night. Recently, I found an adult picture of him on the Internet, and he had stick-straight hair. They were close to his head on the sides, but a little poufy on top, and they always looked ultra-neat. The other instance was an Eagle Scout in my troop, who had a glorious head of blonde curls. I know because my mom asked him about it, and he said he had been given a permanent. His mother gave him at least one perm (this was in 1959). I remember two instances in my (small) home town in which I know boys got permanents. I would love to hear from any of you about what I missed out on that you were lucky enough to have done to you. I had to wait until I went away to college to sneak off to a beauty school for my first sets and perms (this was in April, 1970). I longed for such things when young, but the only thing that ever happened to me was that, at one point, Mom gave me permission to try to set my own hair one day. I love to hear about such experiences, positive or negative. I am jumping in after years of inactivity with a big question to all of you: Were you ever given a permanent wave or roller/pincurl set when you were a boy, either in a beauty shop or at home (presumably by mother, sister, auntie, etc.)? ![]()
